A nearly identical example is illustrated and described in A, Aubry’s 1888 catalogue, p.116, figure 299 and in Charriere & Collin 1890 p. 126, figure 457.  Both sources indicate its use for cauterization of the cervix whereby its box-wood construction provides for protection of the surrounding tissues from the heat of the cautery iron.
