Cavana’s design as portrayed in Truax, figure 1003, consists of a short (50mm.) but otherwise enlarged speculum with wide (52mm.) blades capable of a vertical opening of three inches.  The instrument is particularly well suited to instructional demonstrations and, in some cases, may be used for operative purposes.
