Charriere’s Bivalve V. Speculum

$4.99

In 1834, Phillip Ricord modified Samson’s design by attaching a handle obliquely to each of the two blades. Charriere’s rendition likely predates Ricord’s and incorporates a screw with thumb-wheel to maintain abduction of the blades but not adductions (as the later addition of a thumb-wheel between the handles would provide). The pivot is on the proximal handles such that the blades remain parallel.  Later forms incorporate the pivot at the proximal junction of the blades so the opening at the introitus remains relatively consistent.

A splendid and rare example of Charriere’s transitional form, mailechort blades, steel handles with cross-hatching, sig. - Charriere, A. Paris, FC.
