The most popular English speculum for several decades of the Nineteenth Century was devised by Sir William Fergusson (1808-1877) as described in J. Churchill’s - System of practical surgery - 1857. It consisted of a beveled cylinder, not unlike the original speculum of Recamier.
A scarce nesting set of three of Fergusson’s classic form contained in a beautifully turned and fitted boxwood case, unsigned, EC.
