For more than a century, this and similar forms were the standard instrument for vaginal examination and treatment, and even minor operations were performed through their caliber or side fenestrations.  Plain forms were best for scarification and application of leeches.  At times obturators were included to facilitate insertion. A scarce example in plain glass.
