Non-metallic, tubular specula were useful in that they permitted application of cautery to the cervix while protecting the vagina from thermal injury.  The addition of a fenestration enhanced visualization of bothvesico and recto-vaginal fistulas and facilitated surgery on these and other vaginal sidewall lesions.
