Philippe Ricord,  1800-1889, repeated Hunter’s experiments defining the specific character of syphilis and divided it into three stages, primary, secondary, and tertiary. “Ricord’s chancre” is the name given to the initial lesion associated with primary syphilis.  He also proved that syphilis and gonorrhea were clearly separate and distinct diseases. A splendid, petit example bearing New York maker Tiemann’s mark in gothic script, nickel-plated brass or aluminum, fluted ebony scales covering the handles, VFC.
