For more than a century, this and similar forms were the standard instrument for vaginal examination and treatment, and even minor operations were performed through their caliber or side fenestrations.  Plain forms were best for scarification and application of leeches. At times obturators were included to facilitate insertion. A splendid and relatively scarce set of Fergusson’s model in milk-glass, unsigned and in EC.
