Early wrought iron speculum with crank handle, Continental, c. 16th C. This large instrument has a fixed length of 344mm and 153mm blades. Handle is of finely turned horn or well patinated hardwood. A significant early example thatis remarkably similar to a woodcut of a vaginal speculum in a text on hernias (1561) by the French Huguenot, Pierre Franco.
