A rare c. 1840 antique vaginal douche with anthropomorphic nozzle to facilitate retention of the irrigant within the vagina. Dr. Herber Chase, of Philadelphia describes the construction and use of his Improved Female Syringe in the February, 1837 issue of The American Journal of Medical Sciences. This instrument is also illustrated in Henry Smith’s, The Principles and Practice of Surgery, 1863, Vol. II, plate LVIII, figure 20. The caption reads: “Chase’s Vaginal Syringe.”
