Johann Freidrich Dieffenbach, 1792-1856, was Professor of Surgery in Berlin.  He was a pioneer in the fields of plastic and orthopedic surgery, successfully performing tenotomy (cutting a tendon) and skin grafting.  He is credited with the invention of a number of surgical instruments.
