The Russian Needle Holder is one of the most widely-known patterns.  To lock the instrument in the closed position the operators thumb is brought upon the lock in a downwards motion towards the handle.  To release, the handles are squeezed together and the latch moved upwards towards the jaws. Later modifications incorporated a sprig that activated the lock upon squeezing the handles together.
