Needle Holders or Forceps were almost a necessity in closing wounds, even superficial ones, and for placement of deep-seated sutures, they were practically indispensable.  Opinions varied widely among operators as to the proper size and design and thus, a great many patterns were available to accommodate specialized needles and the nature of the work to be performed.
