Ernst Wertheim (1864-1920) received his medical degree in Graz, Austria then joined Schatua who chaired the first gynecology clinic at the University of Vienna.  Wertheim performed the first fully extended operation for carcinoma of the cervix on 16 November 1897, and ultimately completed some 1300 or so operations.  His more radical abdominal approach was vindicated by the pathologic findings in his series proving that spread of disease beyond the uterus was not just a late manifestation.  Although best known for this work he also made significant contributions to vaginal surgery for prolapse and developed a number of instruments for both operations.
