Getchell’s Buttons were made from lead, Brittania, or such other soft metal as may easily be compressed.  When in use, the suture ends are passed through the central shaft, the button slipped into position and the shaft compressed with a forceps in the same manner as a perforated shot.  The flange protected soft tissues from wire sutures under tension.
