In cases of rupture of the superficial perineum and vesico-vaginal fistula operations, the parts can be reapproximated with either Serre-fines applied with Hoff’s Automatic Suture device.  The clasp or Serre-fine is held on the end of the applicator, and thus precisely applied and subsequently released by activating the slide pin with the operators thumb, leaving the self-holding device behind.  - Medical Investigator, Jan. 1875 & Knight’s New Medical Dictionary - 1884, fig.133
