Sutures are needed to reapproximatethe opposing margins of a wound and may be classified as absorbable and non-absorbable. Non-absorbable Sutures were usually of silk, silkworm gut, horse hair, and wire.  All of these were easily sterilized by boiling in water or by steaming.
